All About Teeth Whitening

TEETH WHITENING IS A GREAT OPTION FOR INSTANTLY REJUVENATING THE LOOK OF YOUR SMILE!!

We are all aware of the things we should and shouldn’t be consuming, but we are only human, right?

Most of us have some (small or large) indulgences in our lives (and why not?!). For some people, it may be morning coffee; for others, a glass of red wine at the end of a long working week.

Even in small doses, over time, these small indulgences can dull the teeth of their natural white and bright colour, discolouring the teeth.

Other indulgences that can discolour our teeth include smoking, tea, herbal teas, soft drinks, and some spices such as turmeric used in certain foods, and even certain medications.

TEETH WHITENING IS A SOLUTION FOR THOSE WHO WANT A BRIGHTER AND WHITER SMILE

HOW DOES TEETH WHITENING WORK?

Our teeth have a hard, outer layer called “Enamel”, which is what gives the tooth its white colour and lustre. The enamel protects the inner layers of the tooth from the harmful/staining things we put in our mouths. Over time, foreign material and food substances accumulate on the enamel and make it look dull and yellow. This outer stained layer can be cleaned away when we go to the dentist and have professional teeth cleaning.

However, sometimes the staining agents can work their way down into the tooth. No amount of surface cleaning of the enamel can remove these stains. THIS IS WHERE TEETH WHITENING COMES IN!

The teeth whitening agent is able to get down into the tooth enamel, break down the staining and whiten the teeth from the INSIDE.

Teeth whitening works by whitening or bleaching the organic pigments within the tooth. That is, by changing the internal {or “intrinsic”} colour of the tooth. This is very different from having the teeth cleaned – which simply removes the external {or “extrinsic”} stains that accumulate on the tooth surface.

WHAT ARE MY TEETH WHITENING OPTIONS?

Broadly speaking, there are 2 main ways to do teeth whitening –

1} Professional In-Office or In-Chair dental whitening treatments,
OR
2} Take home whitening kits

IN-OFFICE WHITENING
At Gentle and Caring Dentistry, Dr. Roxanne Irani uses an in-chair whitening system. In-Chair whitening is ideal for those individuals looking for an instant result.

It is ideal for those attending a special up coming event, a wedding, going overseas, or who simply want a “jump start” on their whitening process. It involves precisely applying the whitening gel to the teeth, taking care not to damage the soft tissues. A special light is then used to activate the gel, to effectively whiten the teeth. The treatment takes about and hour and a half.

Following the in-office procedure, Dr. Irani always provides her patients with take-home whitening mouth trays, and whitening gel so that the treatment can be followed up at home to achieve the most stable end results.

TAKE-HOME WHITENING KITS
Dr. Roxanne Irani makes custom-fitted mouth trays from moulds of your teeth and provides you with whitening gel. The gel is to be placed in the mouth trays and thus direclty applied to the teeth, as directed. Since every case is different, each patient may have different instuctions to get the best out of their whitening treatment.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING A PROFESSIONAL TO WHITEN YOUR SMILE…

While over-the-counter tooth whitening treatments may be tempting, these may not be the best for your tooth enamel and tend to mainly target any surface stains.

Additionally, before any teeth whitening can be successful, we need to determine the underlying cause of the tooth discolouration and address these issues so we can achieve long lasting results.
At Gentle and Caring Dentistry, we always conduct a thorough assessment of your smile in order to identify the source of your tooth discolouration before undertaking any whitening procedure.

SOMETIMES TOOTH DISCOLOURATION CAN GO DEEPER THAN A COSMETIC PROBLEM, and can be caused by:

  • An infection inside the tooth
  • The accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth and gums {Which can be treated with a scale and clean}
  • Certain medications
  • Thinning of the dental enamel
  • Tooth Decay

If any of these is found to be the cause of your staining or discolouration, Dr. Irani will be able to recommend an appropriate treatment to address these issues.
