What Your Oral Health Routine Should Include To Prevent Gum Disease

Your smile and your mouth represent a lot more about you than you might think. Experts have linked poor oral hygiene and poor oral health to a shorter lifespan and can even be risk factors to some serious diseases.

Professore Joerg Eberhard, Chair of Oral Health at the University of Sydney, states there are clear associations between the health of our teeth and our gums and our general health.

Gum Disease { known as Periodontal Disease} and gingivitis, both can result in bacteria and inflammation getting into the blood stream and circulatory system and can contribute to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

The most common signs of gums disease include bleeding gums and to a much lesser extent, bad breathe. Many people think that slight gum bleeding when they eat or brush their teeth is normal, but it is usually a sign of gum disease, which can lead to far greater health problems.

Gum disease can be prevented by:

  • Brushing your teeth and gums with a soft toothbrush, at least twice a day , for at least 2 minutes each time.
  • Using dental floss/ dentotape or an interdental cleaning aid such as an interdental brush, daily.
  • Take extra care if you are on medication
  • Have regular check –ups and
  • Have regular dental cleans by the dentist – Make sure your dentist removes the plaque and Tartar { Calculus} build –up , every 6 months.

Tartar is the hard, calcified deposits on the teeth and gums, that once accumulates, cannot be removed by brushing, but needs professional removal by your dentist.
