Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is important to ensure your mouth remains healthy through all stages of life…

Keeping your teeth and gums clean is a major part of maintaining your overall oral health. An important component in your active maintenance routine is coming into Gentle and Caring Dentistry for your regular 6 monthly check up. Even with regular brushing and flossing, it is still necessary to come in for a professional clean and check up to identify any signs of decay or possible problems. During your visit, we conduct a scale and clean which is simply removing any plaque or tartar that has accumulated on the teeth over a period of time.

Why is it important to remove plaque?

Dental plaque is essentially a build-up of bacteria that can be easily brushed away morning and night. This is why it is very important to stick to a good oral health routine at home.

Sometimes dental plaque can occur in places more difficult to reach, and, as a result, is not brushed away effectively. When plaque is left on the tooth it actually solidifies to form something much more difficult to clean – tartar. Tartar cannot be removed by simple brushing and actually requires a professional dentist to remove this accumulation. If neglected, tartar actually eats away at your tooth enamel, causing cavities and decay.

Will my oral hygiene visit be painful?

Most of our patients find our oral hygiene treatment and cleans painless, and we take extra care in treating those who have dental fear, sensitive teeth or have pain as a symptom of their dental issue. Mainly you will feel sensations described as ‘tickling’, ‘mild pressure’ and ‘scraping’, and these typically do not cause any discomfort.

Dr Irani’s philosophy is to take the time to listen to your needs…

We care about what you want from your smile and oral health and believe taking the time to understand what you need, how your smile feels and any symptoms you may have helps us to personalise your treatment plan and take any pain or fear into consideration to conduct compassionate dental care. It is important to remember that anything achieved in the dental chair will mean nothing if you do not continue looking after your teeth and gums at home. You can do this by:

  • Brushing twice a day – morning and night.
  • Flossing at least once a day – this should be done prior to going to sleep
  • Visiting our Sydney dental practice every six months – this allows us to maintain your oral hygiene and remove any plaque or tartar present
