Root Canal Therapy

Contrary to popular belief, root canal therapy conducted at Gentle and Caring Dentistry should cause minimal discomfort!

Root canal therapy has many negative connotations associated with it and this is due to the old, out-dated conventional methods of performing root canal treatment. With our modern treatment using advanced technology along with our strict standards and gentle touch, we have been able to greatly minimise the pain associated with this treatment.

When is root canal treatment necessary?

The tooth is made up of three main layers; the enamel on the outside, the middle layer called dentin, and the inner layer called the pulp. The pulp is the soft tissue at the core that contains all the nerves and blood vessels that feed the root of the tooth. When this becomes inflamed or infected, the infection could possibly run all the way down the root and hit critical structures of the mouth. This is why conventionally the tooth would have to be extracted; however at Dr Roxanne Irani’s Gentle and Caring Dentistry in Sydney we will generally conduct a root canal treatment in order to save your tooth.

What does root canal therapy involve?

During your consultation, our dentists will inform you about all aspects of the procedure and outline any associated risks or possible complications. Once you are happy to move forward with treatment, we will then be able to begin your root canal:

  1. We will take care to numb the area being treated with a local anaesthetic, or if you so require: sedation dentistry.
  2. Our dentist will then remove the infected pulp from the tooth, after which the tooth is cleaned and sealed to prevent any further damage.
  3. If your tooth has become brittle due to this procedure, we will generally recommend a dental crown to place over the tooth to ensure its strength and structural integrity.

During this process, we will always ensure you are completely comfortable and encourage you to tell us if you experience any discomfort or pain during treatment.

At Gentle and Caring Dentistry we understand this is an invasive procedure that may cause some anxiety or fear, and offer a range of sedation options to help anxious patients relax during treatment.
