Top makeup tips to make your pearly whites glow

If you’ve invested in teeth whitening treatment, or are planning it in the near future but looking to make them appear whiter in the mean-time there are a number of makeup tips that can help.

Dr Irani at Gentle and Caring Dentistry knows that a glowing smile can really work wonders for your overall look, so we’ve put together this list of tips from the beauty professionals about how to emphasise a white smile.

It’s all in your makeup!

We all know that how we apply our makeup can dramatically change our look but many of us don’t consider how white our teeth are when deciding on our makeup. Whether it’s for a special event, photo shoot or just your daily-look your makeup can make all the difference.

Lipstick, lipstick, lipstick…

The first tip is one some of you may already know. The colour of your lipstick will either whiten the appearance of your teeth or highlight their yellow tinge. The best lipsticks for whiter teeth have blue undertones. The blue balances with the yellow of your teeth and helps it visually fade.

The make-up pro’s say to go with fuschia or plum type shades or apply a layer of lighter blue or purple under your favourite red to balance the two out. You can also apply a purple layer under a bright red pigmented gloss to achieve the balance.

It’s all in the eyes…

Tweak your usual eye routine to include cooler shades such as purples and greens which will help to deflect yellow in the teeth.

If you want to keep your look smoky simply make sure your eyes make a statement and grab attention as this will also help detract from your teeth.

Select the right bronzer

Some make-up pro’s say to steer clear of fake tan entirely; whereas others say to really avoid the orange shade that is often par for the course. If you must fake tan it is advised that you avoid warm toned bronzers and go for the taupe shades instead, again this helps the discolouration on your teeth to be less apparent.

Go for gold silver!

We’re all told winners get gold, but when it comes to shimmer on your face go for silver. Just like orange in tans, gold in shimmer will highlight any yellow tones. Switch to a light dusting with silver based shimmer for that luminous glow.

Also opt away from gold jewellery such as earrings and necklaces as their proximity can also play up the yellow.

Be a blushing babe

When selecting a blush go for cooler shades such as soft pink which also work to combat the discolouration. Avoid coral or peach as they both have undertones that won’t help your cause.

Go the extra mile for photos

If your event is going to be bursting at the seams with photographers there’s a little known secret that can help your teeth look whiter… rub a tiny bit of red food colouring into your gums with a soft toothbrush.

The food colouring won’t stain your teeth but will make your gums a nice healthy red, making your teeth even whiter.
Book a teeth whitening treatment

If you’re looking for something more permanent, or are desperate to wear orange undertones and peachy blush request an appointment at Dr Roxanne Irani’s Gentle and Caring Dentistry in Maroubra for a teeth whitening treatment.
