Sedation Dentistry

If you require a local anaesthetic, generally this would require a needle. The Wand uses a computer controlled device that injects the sedative directly into the area being treated – this means only the area being treated goes numb, not your entire mouth! This form of sedation is typically used for local anaesthetic or for those who are terrified of needles.

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is an odourless, colourless gas that non-irritating and is breathed in by the patient to slowly relax and sedate them. The great thing about this option is the patient has control of how deep their sedation gets, depending on their levels of fear or anxiety. Four levels of sedation can usually be felt with laughing gas, and these include:

1. A tingling sensation or feeling of vibration
2. Warm sensations throughout the body
3. A feeling of total wellbeing – with heavier sedation hearing may become dissolved into a small throbbing sound
4. The deepest level of sedation makes the patient sleepy and sometimes go into a ‘dream-like’ state.
