General Questions
What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is a range of dental treatments to enhance the appearance of your smile.
Cosmetic or Aesthetic dentistry is the broad heading describing the dental procedures that improve the appearance of the teeth. This may be achieved by teeth polishing or teeth whitening, or a simple white filling.
It also includes placing bondings or veneers on teeth to improve their appearance or even crown or dental implants.
There are times when no matter what we do, our teeth get chipped, cracked or discoloured. At Gentle and Caring Dentistry we offer a range of cosmetic dental treatments to visibly whiten, brighten and rejuvenate your smile.
The cosmetic dental treatments we offer are:
- Porcelain veneers
- Composite bonding
- Teeth whitening
- Smile transformation
What causes tooth decay?
If left untreated tooth decay can cause tooth loss.
Tooth decay is when bacteria in your mouth makes acid that eats away at your tooth. Tooth decay is caused by a combination of bacteria and food. Plaque that contains bacteria is always forming on your teeth and gums, and as the bacteria feeds on the sugars in the food you eat, they make acids.
The acids attack your teeth for twenty minutes or so after eating. Over time, these acids destroy tooth enamel and this results in tooth decay.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
There are different stages of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums because of bacteria in plaque build-up. This is why teeth bleed during tooth brushing. While gingivitis is a precursor to periodontitis, not all gingivitis progresses to periodontitis.
Periodontitis is when the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth and form pockets. These pockets becoming infected and if left untreated can cause bone and gum tissue to be destroyed.
Symptoms of gum disease are:
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Gums that bleed after tooth brushing
- Receding gums
- Loose or shifting teeth

What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial or false tooth used to replace a missing tooth.
Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth or many missing teeth. The first component is the titanium “root replacement” which is inserted into the jaw and left to integrate or bond to the bone (3 months period approx).
Once this has occurred, a specially made crown or artificial tooth is placed on top. Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth.
Why do I have to place a crown on my tooth?
A Crown is a full coverage restoration that fits over the existing natural tooth and replaces the natural crown of the tooth (that part of the tooth seen above the gums).
A Crown is like a “cap”. It is “hollow” and permanently cemented over the top of the natural tooth.
Crowns are used to strengthen teeth, and avoid them from chipping or breaking. For this reason a Crown is especially recommended after a large filling has been placed in a tooth or after Root Canal Therapy has been done to a tooth.
Crowns are also used to improve the shape and colour of teeth.
How should I maintain my new veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are stain resistant.
Looking after your porcelain veneers is as easy as maintaining your regular oral hygiene. Even though your veneers are stain resistant they are not stain-proof. Keeping coffee, wine and smoking down to a minimum and avoid biting into excessively hard things like ice or bottle caps should help you maintain your veneers for longer.
If looked after properly veneers can last up to 10-15 years.
How can I solve my tooth loss without dentures?
If you’re missing teeth but don’t want dentures Gentle and Caring Dentistry has the solution
Dental implants are the best restorative dental treatment for missing teeth. Dental implants are made from biocompatible material and are surgically inserted into the jaw to effectively mimic the tooth root.
Once the jaw has healed around the implant a prosthetic tooth is attached to the implant. The full dental implant treatment is beneficial both for your health and for the appearance of your smile.
How much is this going to cost?
We believe in informing you about all aspects of your treatment prior to conducting it, including cost…
To ensure you know what costs are involved, after your initial examination we can organise a Treatment Plan with the cost and item codes.
