Bad Breath

Bad breath is something we all want to avoid, and at Gentle and Caring Dentistry we can help you prevent bad breath…

Bad breath (also known as Halitosis) is something that can cause much embarrassment and lack of self-confidence. The good thing is, most of the time bad breath is avoidable and could be brought about by something as simple as the foods you eat!

General Questions

What causes bad breath?

Bad breath can be caused by a wide range of factors, some obvious and some less so. By reducing or eliminating factors associated or easily controlled in your day-to-day life, you will be able to tell whether it is something you should bring up at your next consultation. The main causes of Halitosis include:

  • Foods such as garlic or onions, as these contain acids that tend to remain at the back of the throat, causing smelly breath.
  • Poor oral health can cause bad breath. If you do not brush your teeth then you allow bacteria to build up over time, of which release a gas that has an unpleasant smell. Stay on top of your oral hygiene to prevent this from occurring.
  • Dry mouth can lead to bad breath. This is because saliva acts as your main defence against bacteria and washes away food particles that would otherwise deteriorate between the teeth. Dry mouth can occur due to mouth-breathing, glandular issues or some medications. If you suffer from dry mouth have a chat with your GP or try to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Gum disease is a major cause of bad breath. A bad taste in the mouth or persistent bad breath are both initial signs of the development of gum disease.
At Gentle and Caring Dentistry we can help find the source of your Halitosis…

We will conduct a thorough assessment of your mouth to find and identify the source of your bad breath. If it is not lifestyle-related such as from smoking or eating acidic foods, we will recommend a treatment to help alleviate your bad breath.

If you suffer from chronic or persistent bad breath without an immediately obvious reason, it is best to book an appointment at our Sydney dental practice to ensure the health of your mouth.
